Five Ways to Discover New Indie Games

June 1, 2018

With such a diverse mix of video games coming out daily, it can be hard to find new, unique games that are not being overshadowed by the advertising and popularity of bigger names. Indie games, which is a blanket statement for less mainstream games produced by smaller developers and studios, are often more creative and offer different gameplay than the newest version of series like Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed. Without notoriety, smaller developers need to focus on making fun, original games instead of solely following gamer trends, giving users a fresh new experience. However, it may seem daunting to scour the internet for indie games that you’ll like. Apart from scrolling through Steam, we compiled a list of the best ways to discover cool indie games.

YouTube

Channels like Get Indie Gaming, compile monthly lists of new games to look out for.

An endless void of videos for every topic imaginable, YouTube is a useful tool for finding any kind of game review. Many big gaming channels like Markiplier or Game Grumps and even smaller ones like The Pixel Pirate all feature tons of videos reviewing, playing, and promoting indie games. Watching “let’s play”s can help you decide whether to play or not, as well as give insider feedback to the game.

Warp Door are constantly uploading new posts featuring a wide variety of games.

This blog exists in a self-proclaimed “transitive state”. It shares and discusses new games, usually from indie developers. Consistent posting and fun writing has made it THE place to find out about new, unique games with the rest of their loyal followers.

Reddit

Another helpful resource are the many subreddits dedicated to indie gaming. An even greater content abyss than YouTube, /r/indiegaming and /r/indiedev have threads related to reviews, game launches, developer Q&As and discussion with other users in the community. Although less straightforward than other indie blogs, subreddits can lead you to spontaneously discover new games you would have never played otherwise.

Look for new games or if you're a developer, add your own to increase visibility!

Both a database and a blog, Itch.io is one of the most well-known sites thanks to their dedication to indie games. They have a whole database of games sorted by various category tags and prices for you to browse through. There is also a blog portion of the site for interviews with developers and recommendations that can give readers more insight.

Local Events

A wild event to see crazy games and have fun with friends.

There’s nothing better than actually playing games and finding out for yourself what’s new and happening in the indie community. Many cities all over the world have indie game events and showcases that let the public try out games in a social environment. In Berlin, events like A MAZE. or Talk and Play gives gamers a chance to interact with developers and play their games. A MAZE., an annual weekend festival, features tons of unique and often off-the-wall indie games made for VR and traditional consoles.
